US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump has called on the nations governors to crack down on protesters further, cheering police for more brutality against demonstrators seeking justice for George Floyd.
"Dominate" and "take back your streets," a source reportedly said Trump told governors, according to The Hill.
"This call was insane," said one source briefed on the call. "They just went off on governors."
In a statement Sunday, Attorney General William Barr threatened the protesters, taking to the street to condemn police brutality.
"Federal law enforcement actions will be directed at apprehending and charging the violent radical agitators who have hijacked peaceful protest and are engaged in violations of federal law," Barr said in a statement.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany has, meanwhile, announced that Trump will use "federal assets" in response to the violent protests.
"What the president has said is he wants to dominate the streets with National Guard, with a police presence," McEnany told reporters. "What studies have shown... there are several studies that when theres an overwhelming National Guard presence it actually deescalates the situation and causes less civil unrest."
Trump has threatened he would mobilize "all available federal resources, civilian and military" to clamp down on protests.
"I want the organizers of this terror to be on notice that you will face severe criminal penalties and lengthy sentences in jail."
Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed in Minneapolis police custody a week ago after a white officer knelt on his neck for over eight minutes.
